A key figure in the launching of the Zap Club and now Chief Executive of Zap Art was Dave Reeves. His early connections stemmed from being a doorman at the cavernous art students’ Basement Club.

The other Zap founding light was Neil Butler, who in 1976 (as Vice-President of the Brighton Polytechnic Student Union) was responsible for booking many performance events at the Basement and for setting up the Brighton Contemporary Festival of Arts.

In 1982 Neil and Amanda Scott formulated their ideal night out - an edgy club that would push the limits of art and entertainment. They scraped together all the money they could find, hired the basement of the New Oriental Hotel, and invited journalist Bob Shelton.
