1995

In August 1995 the Stage described Britain as the “Third World of Street Theatre”, lagging far behind France. This was not a reflection on the Zap, which saw street theatre as the art form of the twenty-first century and did much to lead the way.

In 1990, during Glasgow’s tenure as the European Capital of Culture, the Zap had co-ordinated an international programme of street theatre. In 1993 / 94 it organised street performances in various London boroughs under the ?Streets of London’ banner.

Then, during the Brighton Festival in May 1995, it launched the ?Streets of Brighton’ which from 1997 hosted the annual National Street Arts Meeting - a platform for debate on street arts issues.
