1997

In one respect this was a sad year for the Zap as the arches were sold in November and the Zap Club got new owners, Webb Kirby Limited. On the other hand, it was a new beginning...

In 1996 £84,000 of National Lottery funding had been awarded to Zap Arts to take its free outdoor performances across the UK. The first National Street Arts Meeting was held in Brighton during the Festival. This proposed a co-ordinated national programme of street theatre, which commenced under the banner of the National Street Arts Festival in 1998.

1997 also saw the first successful Interreg applications in Sussex and Kent to start developing Polycentres for European Artistic Creation (PECA). Partnerships were established with French street arts organisations and festivals in Rouen, Amiens and Lille to enable the performance of programmes from festival to festival.
