2001

The Zap pushed on with a Matsuri spectacular in Hyde Park. It was ten years since the organisation had first turned the park into an open-air festival celebrating everything Japanese. Nonetheless, in 2001, Prince Charles; the Emperor of Japan and the public were treated to horseback archery, Taiko drummers and a Japanese village brimming with food and drink.

Less extensive was the National Street Arts Festival programme, which without Heritage Lottery funding was reduced in size. Some Streets of London, the Midlands, the South and South West still came alive to free street performances, while the Streets of Brighton continued its cultural partnership with street festivals in France.

Also on the local menu were some new events such as Brighton Live 2001, a live music day; the West Pier Waterfront Festival and, further afield, the fifth Winter Street Festival in Tunbridge Wells.
