Despite few people having a good word to say about the Zap’s dream of creating a permanent Brighton home for cabaret, music and comedy, the club acquired its first premises in the seafront arches. As Neil Butler wryly recalls, “Everyone was ready to write us off. One side said we were a load of people with trendy haircuts catering for the trendy haircut brigade, while the people with trendy haircuts thought we were too broad.”
Nonetheless the gamble - and it was personal gamble for Neil and Pat who re-mortgaged their house to put cash into the venture - paid off and the Zap Club became forever in the foreground of national and world-wide press.
